Meredith Bowen

Meredith Bowen is the new Music Director for the Battle Creek Girls’ Chorus.  In 2005, she received her Master’s of Music in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University.  Before embarking on her master’s degree, Meredith taught for four years in public school, held directing and singing positions in local churches, and earned her B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University, PA.

In addition to Battle Creek Girls’ Chorus, Ms. Bowen is the Artistic Director of Sistrum, Lansing Women’s Chorus where she has enjoyed leadership since 2001.  During her tenure with Sistrum, she has collaborated with local choruses, has traveled to perform in festivals in San Diego and Cincinnati, and was instrumental in the conception and execution of Sistrum’s first CD, Sweet Women.

Ms. Bowen also conducts the Lansing Community College Concert Choir, teaches History of World Music, works as Musical Director at the Riverwalk Theatre for The Full Monty, and maintains a private voice studio in the Lansing area.

Favorite music: Choral music, of course, although my ipod holds everything from "Ave Maria" to "Boogie Wonderland";The Wicked Soundtrack to Bach B minor Mass;and Kathleen Battle to Alicia Keys.

Favorite food: I love to eat! And I'm a bit adventurous. I LOVE sushi. My favorite pizza topping is fresh tomato and pineapple. I also like Subway's peanut butter cookies.

Pets: I used to have 1 and a half dogs. The 1 dog was an apricot Standard Poodle named Chester. The half dog was a black mixed terrier named Nigel. They were kindof the yin and yang of dogdom.

Hobbies: When I'm not doing anything musical, I like to garden, read, work out at the gym, and cook. I also love to travel and shop! I love finding really great sales on clothes, especially shoes!

My favorite TV shows are Project Runway, Top Chef, and The Soup. Favorite destinations; I love New York City, Paris, and all of England. I hope to go to Italy soon.

Favorite musical moment: Those moments when you sing from your heart, and you can't help but cry because it's so beautiful. Or when I'm directing and people sing like that for me!

Funniest musical moment: Well, looking back on it, it's funny. When I was in high school, I was in the show "Anything Goes." We had a two story set, and I was on top of the set, singing my heart out during a performance. When it came time for me to exit, I had to walk down the VERY steep steps. I navigated two steps successfully, and then my heel caught on the third step. I started to fall, but thankfully caught myself; however my heel was not so lucky. It came off completely, bounced down every step and rolled across the stage. Once I got to the bottom of the steps, I limped across the stage, picked up the heel, looked at it, shrugged, and threw it offstage! Looking back on this, it might be more appropriate to file this under my "Most Embarrassing Musical Moment."
